Boxers were developed in 19th-century Germany from the now-extinct Bullenbeisser (bull-biter) and English Bulldogs, originally used for hunting large game. The modern Boxer is a medium-to-large working breed with a striking appearance and an animated, expressive face. They're known for their playfulness well into adulthood; some say Boxers are perpetual puppies. They're patient with children and protective of their family without being aggressive. Their short coat requires minimal maintenance, but they do need significant daily exercise to stay mentally and physically balanced.

What heart condition do Boxers commonly develop?
Boxers have two primary cardiac concerns. Boxer cardiomyopathy (ARVC) causes abnormal heart rhythms that can produce fainting or sudden death in apparently healthy middle-aged dogs. Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) also occurs and weakens the heart muscle over time. Annual cardiac screening with a Holter monitor and echocardiogram is strongly recommended from age 2 onward for all Boxers.
Why do Boxers act like puppies for so long?
Boxers reach physical maturity around 18 to 24 months but retain a boisterous, playful personality until roughly age 3. This prolonged juvenile period is a consistent breed trait. Basic obedience training from early puppyhood is important so a dog that eventually weighs 60 to 70 lbs has reliable manners before they reach full strength.
Do Boxers tolerate heat well?
No. Their shortened muzzle limits panting efficiency, which is a dog's primary cooling mechanism. Boxers overheat faster than most breeds in warm weather. Exercise during cooler morning or evening hours in summer, provide shade and water constantly, and watch for heavy drooling and disorientation as early signs of heat stress.
How much do Boxers shed?
Boxers shed moderately year-round. Their short, tight coat is easy to maintain with weekly brushing using a rubber curry brush. Compared to double-coated breeds, shedding is manageable. They are not hypoallergenic and do produce dander.
